World Languages Celebration

The last week of September saw Chiswick abuzz with the sound of a whole range of languages being spoken across the school. Using the European Day of Languages on Tuesday 26th September as a starting point, staff and students at Chiswick celebrated languages from across our community and the world. After being set the challenge to include another language in their lessons, Chiswick teachers did not disappoint and spoke an impressive twenty languages in lessons! Special mention goes to Mr Haywood, Mr Orr and Ms Whitaker who were nominated by the students for their efforts.

Some of our teachers also leant their skills to a video, put together by Ms Triboulet, and the students enjoyed guessing which language they were speaking. Our younger students also took part in a treasure hunt to find the famous linguists nominated by each department for their links to their subject.

In Languages lessons, Year 7 students presented their languages projects, the product of four weeks of exploring the building blocks of language, studying examples of constructed languages, and designing their own. Years 7 and 8 students also enjoyed the opportunity to teach each other words in other languages they spoke, and to find out more about the French- and German-speaking world. In Years 9-11, students explored famous speakers of their language, learned about their teachers’ experiences of living abroad, and explored the career benefits of studying languages.

Merci beaucoup and danke schön to all our talented, multilingual staff and students for their enthusiasm this week - and remember, a language is for life, and not just for Languages Week!
