BackLanguages Week
In the last week of September, we celebrated Languages Week at Chiswick. The aims were to celebrate the diversity of our school community, to raise awareness about the benefits of learning languages, and to learn some new words in other languages.
Students took part in a jam-packed week of activities, such as a film night, a form time quiz and assemblies on the theme ‘’to have another language is to possess another soul’’. In languages lessons, students learned about careers in languages, famous French and German speakers, and teaching each other languages they spoke at home. Year 7 students also presented the languages they have been designing over the past few weeks and completed a passport with a range of activities linking languages with other subjects. Year 7 and Year 8 also took part in a treasure hunt around the school, finding facts about famous French and German speakers linked to a range of subjects.
Students and staff also took part in an international bake off organised by Mrs Murray and the Year 12 languages students. The Languages office was heaving with goodies from all sorts of cultures, which were sold at lunchtime raising more than £100 for the school’s charity MIND.
Staff across the school also got involved, contributing to a display about favourite words in other languages and opportunities they had had because of speaking other languages. Lots of teachers got into the spirit of languages week by using other languages in their lessons, with students voting for the teacher who made the best effort!
Year 10 students attended a multilingual fun fair in Westminster organised by the European Union and the European Parliament office. They took part in a poetry workshop and wrote their own multilingual poems, as well as taking part in language taster sessions run by university lecturers. Year 9 students attended a European careers roadshow in South Kensington organised by the Goethe Institut, where they attended a panel discussion about AI and the future of language learning. Students learned about the opportunities for study and careers with languages, as well as picking up some freebies!
A huge merci/danke to all staff and students who took part and made this year’s Languages Week such a huge success. Remember, learning a language is not just for the classroom, so you can make every week Languages Week!
