Year 12 Sankofa Project

Some of our Year 12 History students have been participating in a workshop programme this half term, which gives them a unique opportunity to do some primary historical research themselves, and to present this to the public. The Sankofa Project looks at freedom seekers - people who escaped slavery in our local area during the 1700s - and our students are using a range of archival material to find new information, in order to paint a better picture of the life of Black London during this period. Ultimately, they will be adding the newly discovered knowledge to Wikipedia, in order to share what they learn as widely as possible and also as part of a wider global effort to diversify the site.

The students started the programme with an afternoon out at Fulham Palace, visiting an exhibition about transatlantic slavery and its impact on the area, and will be finishing after half term with a visit to the London Metropolitan Archives to study some of the sources in real life, and to learn about the digitisation process. The students have really impressed us with their dedication to the programme and with their enthusiasm for what they are doing. We're excited to see where they end up!
