BackSathnam Sanghera Talk
Year 7 had a truly brilliant opportunity this term in the form of a talk by acclaimed journalist and writer Sathnam Sanghera. Sanghera has just published a new book called Stolen History about the British Empire and its legacy, and came to speak to students about the impact of the British Empire on our culture and communities today. As well as a valuable historical outline of the growth of the Empire, the talk gave students a thoughtful insight into all the ways that the Empire still affects us today, from the food and drink we consume to the diversity of our community, to words in our language that have come from elsewhere.
Sanghera helped students to think carefully about the way the British Empire was portrayed in England at the time and is thought about now, in order to think more deeply about how we tell our histories and what that can show us about a society. We have full class sets of Sanghera’s new book and look forward to reading it with classes next year! The students were also excited to hear about Sanghera’s varied journalistic career, including his time reviewing cars. Their questions at the end showed a great level of engagement with the many ideas he shared, and he said afterwards how much he had enjoyed his visit - well done, Year 7!
