BackChiswick House Black History Project
Eight Chiswick students from Year 10 and Year 12 took part this year in a project with our neighbours at Chiswick House to uncover more of the local community’s black history through the materials and architectural designs of the house. The students participated in two workshops with historians at Chiswick House, and then did some of their own research into relevant topics as diverse as the history of the silk trade and Ancient Egyptian architectural designs. Following this, the students put together a very professional interactive display which is now part of the permanent exhibition in Chiswick House, and which was unveiled at a special event on 4th July.
The project helped students to better understand their own connections to Chiswick House and the deeper history of the building, leading to fascinating and thoughtful conversations about what we can discover about culture and historical connections from buildings, and also how best to present public history and catch people’s attention with information which matters. All in all, it was a brilliant experience and opportunity and we look forward to working with Chiswick House for the third year in a row to discover more.
Please go and visit any time over the summer to see our students’ work, and that of other local youth groups!
