BackYear 8 Rhineland Trip
By Elizabeth V
At around 6:15am on Friday 17th May, 43 Year 8's got on a coach, ready to set off for Germany. The coach driver gave out a few rules and started to drive us on our 12 hour trip. The trip felt like an eternity, mainly because I was so eager to be there; it was hard to relax whilst thinking of all the things that would happen in Germany.
After what felt like aeons of sitting, we finally got to the hotel in Koblenz. We had dinner, then we were given our room numbers. We had half an hour to settle in and then we went on a walk to the riverside and monuments. The walk was really nice because we got to tour the area where we were staying and the weather was good and the overall mood was good.
The next day we had to get to breakfast at 7:30! My roommates and I were last out of our rooms and for that I blame my friend since she was taking forever to get up. We had a boat ride that was calming and then we went to a cute little town called Rüdesheim. We went on a cable car, which was relaxing, and it had a cool view of the surrounding area. We went up and saw a few monuments, then came down and had snacks. Most people rushed to the bakery to buy pretzels. In the afternoon, we toured Marksburg Castle, which was really cool. Everyone complained about the flight of stairs we had to walk up, but that was just funny. Then we went back to the hotel and had dinner. In the evening, we went swimming, which was actually really hilarious and a lot of trends caught on fast. First it was trying to climb up a slope, then sliding down the slide all together. At one point, Mr Edun slid down as well. After all that excitement it was time to sleep…
Day 2 began with another early breakfast, but this time we woke up ridiculously early just so we weren’t late. We got on the coach and travelled to Cologne to visit the zoo, the cathedral and the Chocolate Museum. It was fun and the cathedral was very pretty. After dinner we had bowling, which was fun and competitive, since I wanted to win, I didn’t though. Then sleep again!
Day 3 was Phantasialand! The whole day was amazing. The rides were all different from what you would find in England. They also have Europe’s fastest roller coaster there and I can say I went on it twice, which is pretty cool. After a whole day of rides, we finally got back to the hotel at roughly 7pm and had a sort of “awards ceremony” which was cringe in 10,000 ways - some awards were funny, others were a bit random. After that, we went to Lidl and bought snacks and drinks for the next 12 hour journey. And finally, we went on our last walk.
Early the next morning, there was breakfast and praise from the teachers, then a coach journey. We travelled for 10 whole hours. We were finally in England and it felt weird not seeing so much greenery. We finally got to Chiswick School. That was the end of 5 days which will be very hard to forget.
