BackYear 11 Geography Trip to Brighton
On Wednesday 17th and Thursday 18th of April, Year 10 as well as some of our Year 11s, headed to Brighton as part of their GCSE Geography course. The aim was to collect primary data to answer the question - how does hard engineering at Brighton impact coastal processes and the Brighton community? To answer this question, we measured the angle of the beach profile on each side of the groynes, measured sediment from the sea to the land, as well as asked locals questions about their opinions on the engineering at Brighton.
It took us a while to get there, needing three trains due to engineering works but when we arrived, we took the long stretch down the hill to the sea soaking in some Brighton sights along the way. While data collection was the main reason for the trip, the sea air, skimming stones and enjoying some much needed sun was a bonus.
On Wednesday, some of our students learned about longshore drift the hard way when they lost the ball they bought from the shop as it moved along the coastline being pushed by the prevailing wind. No trip to Brighton is complete without a visit to the chip shop and getting an ice cream. We found a great spot called Mama’s Fish, which had absolutely delicious and generous portions of chips. It was great to support a local business on both days - if you are in Brighton, it is definitely worth a visit.
As always, a big thank you to all that supported the trip - the Geography team is always so appreciative of the additional staff who come to support us.
