Music Update

Proms Trip

It’s about time Chiswick Students started a riot. On Saturday 2nd September, the Senior Music and Performing Arts students embarked on the third annual BBC Proms trip, this year to see The Rite of Spring, Stravinsky’s infamous 1913 ballet, whose premiere was so controversial that it incited the Parisian aristocracy to erupt into riotous chaos. The music was delightfully terrifying, as we learnt the tale of a prehistoric pagan Russian youth who danced herself to death to appease the Gods of springtime. All that for £9 tickets at the Albert hall.

Music Essay Competition

At Chiswick we absolutely love putting on shows, but secretly, we also love a good essay. In July, the music department had its first annual essay competition. There were 10 questions to choose from including ‘Has You Tube been good for music?’, ‘Is sampling theft or quotation?’ and ‘Is Jazz America’s Classical Music?’ The Senior Winner was Emma P on ‘Define bad taste’, the Junior winner was Orla S on ‘Make the case that Friday by Rebecca Black is a good song’, and the junior runner up was Hayden on ‘We should ditch Mozart in schools and teach Stormzy instead - discuss’. Many congratulations to all.

Xing and the Backups: The Farewell Show

There were smiles, there were tears, there were perhaps a few empty pint glasses, and there was a completely packed City Barge pub to send off the most lovely, entertaining, and skilled band that Chiswick has had for a very long time. On Wednesday 27th September, we said our final farewells to Xing, Nathaniel, Zoe, Olly, and a belated farewell to Damia, a Chiswick Alumna. We had their signature songs - from Sir Duke to Hey Ya, and Valerie. We now wish Melina and Aaliyah in Year 12 all the best as they undergo weeks of mourning at the loss of their bandmates.

Chiswick Voices to Sing at King’s College, Cambridge

On Monday 13th November at 5:30pm, Chiswick Voices will be joining King’s Voices for a service of Choral Evensong in the Chapel of King’s College, Cambridge. We are humbled and delighted as a school to be given such an opportunity and we are determined to spread Chiswick’s strong reputation even further beyond the M25. If you would like to watch the choir, the service is public and no tickets are required, but it would be best to arrive enough in advance to get a good seat.

The Q at the Queen’s Head

On Friday 29th September, The Q were kindly hosted once again by the lovely, local and Chiswick School family run pub, the Queen’s Head in Chiswick.

They played on the beautiful covered patio area surrounded by fairy lights, to a packed house of friends, family and pub patrons, and did an hour- long set of their favourites, as well as their brand new song, “Never Let Me Go”. Possibly their last al fresco gig for a while, it was thoroughly enjoyed by all.

Calling any (even remotely) musical parents: Faure Requiem

In late March 2024 (provisionally Wednesday 20th March), Chiswick Voices will be singing Faure’s Requiem together with a completely new group - ‘Chiswick Community Choir’. Chiswick Community Choir is hoped to be made up of parents, teachers, and members of the local community. We would likely meet for one or two evening rehearsals earlier in the year, and then join Chiswick Voices on the day. If you have ever sung Faure’s Requiem, ever sung in a choir, or you are relishing a new challenge in life, fill in this form here to register interest.
