BackEPQ trip to the British Library
Year 12 EPQ students took part in an in person academic writing workshop, delivered by Tom Lee, an author and Royal Literary Fund Fellow. Students who are currently doing an Extended Project Qualification were able to develop their academic writing skills. This time next year, students will have to submit a 5000- word essay. Projects range from nuclear fission, diplomacy in the British Empire and the portrayal of women in the media and we are looking forward to learning more about them through their essays. With essay-writing in mind, students took part in a variety of tasks, focusing on clear, direct and concise writing; understanding critical thinking; practising paragraph planning; and exploring the editing process. Students also received a short tour of the British Library which is home to approximately 200,000 UK published items. Mrs Whitaker and Mr Williams were impressed with thoughtful answers from so many of the students, in particular, Sussan who considerately argued how Margaret Atwood’s short story ‘Happy Endings’ is in fact a good story, despite repetition, simple sentences and vocabulary. If you want to know more about the Extended Project Qualification, watch this video, or take a look at the specification. We look forward to taking the next cohort of EPQ students to the British Library next year!
