Black History Month at Chiswick

BHM Library DisplayBlack History Month is always a joy to celebrate at Chiswick School, but this year’s national theme ‘Proud to Be’ allowed us a fantastic opportunity to talk positively about our histories and heritages in the school. With a focus on black British history and black cultures in our school, students were treated to break-time performances by the steel pan band, Caribbean food in the canteen, live music with their Friday coconut treats and the chance to attend a session of the Culture Club in the library, where Mr Wootton led readings of short stories, fairy tales and poems from authors and poets of colour.

Meanwhile, several students were brave enough to participate in a recorded assembly which was viewed by all classes in the school, speaking about figures in black British history they felt we should celebrate and be proud of, including Olaudah Equiano, Mary Seacole and Paul Stephenson. Congratulations to the following students for their impressive research and public speaking:

  • Ayomide O, Y8
  • Nevaeh B D-S, Y9
  • Wallid J, Y10
  • Anas N, Y10
