Chiswick Computer Science faculty believe that Computer Science is a crucial tool needed to survive in our modern world that is being constantly adapted with the latest technologies. It has become part of the way we all learn, work and entertain ourselves. We believe a high-quality computing and information technology education equips students to use computational thinking and creativity to understand and change the world.

The core of computing is computer science, in which students are taught the principles of information and computation, how digital systems work, and how to put this knowledge to use through programming. A number of Programming languages are delivered, including Python, to solve a variety of computational problems. Building on this knowledge and understanding, students are equipped to use information technology to create programs, systems and a range of content. Computer Science also ensures that students become digitally literate – driven, and express themselves and develop their ideas through identifying issues and problem solving – at a level suitable for the future workplace and as active participants in a digital world. The knowledge rich curriculum from year 7 - 13 allows students to build on these skills and prepare for academic exams and the real world.

The Computer Science department covers enrichment activities such as ‘Retro Gaming’ and robotics club ‘Chiswick Cyborgs’ which compete in the First Tech Challenge. During these extra - curricular activities students develop STEM skills and practice engineering principles whilst being innovative. Our aim at Chiswick is not only to ensure students successfully complete their qualifications to the best of their ability but also to equip all students with the skills needed to survive in our rapidly-changing world. We want our students to be able to participate fully in a world of technology. We aim to enable them to find, explore, analyse, exchange and present information but also to become successful computational thinkers. We want our students to be ambitious and proud about Computer Science.

Our Key Stage Three curriculum for year 7 to 9 will cover the foundations of Computer Science. Students will have the opportunity to cover units that will prepare them for the GCSE at Key Stage 4. It is an introduction to the fundamental elements that create Computer Science and covers the understanding of programming and computer systems. 

KS4 - Exam Board - OCR

At Key Stage 4 we aim to develop a course that promotes critical thinking, analysis and problem solving skills through the study of computer programming. Giving students a fun and interesting way to develop skills which can be transferred to other subjects and applied in day to day life.

What skills will I develop?

  • Acquiring and applying knowledge of the use of algorithms in computer programs to solve problems
  • Developing computer programs to solve problems
  • Evaluating the effectiveness of computer programs/solutions and the impact of, and issues related to, the use of computer technology in society
  • An understanding of current and emerging technologies, how they work and applying this knowledge in a range of contexts
  • The development of project management skills
