All members of the PSHCE department are passionate about teaching this relevant and useful subject as we believe the knowledge , skills and attributes pupils learn underpin everything they need to know in order to keep themselves safe and healthy in modern Britain. We aim to help pupils make the right choices now and in the future .Adolescence is a very difficult period of life and we enable pupils to navigate the many challenges they face in order to thrive as individuals, family members and members of society.From making responsible decisions about alcohol to succeeding in their first job, PSHCE education helps pupils to manage many of the most critical opportunities, challenges and responsibilities they will face growing up.Our approach is very much to look at topics from the perspective of the pupils so that we can challenge and acknowledge how these current experiences can prepare them for all that life brings.

In our lessons we provide a safe and supportive learning environment where our young people can develop the confidence to ask questions, challenge the information they are offered, draw on their own experience, express their views and opinions and put what they have learned into practice in their own lives. The skills and attributes acquired through PSHE education have a positive impact on academic performance and life chances as well as being key to boosting the employability of school-leavers and improving social mobility.

The Programme of Study represents a clear coverage of the statutory guidance for RSE (Relationships and Sex education) and Health Education using the primary framework as our starting point for learners. We have broken our Programme of Study down into 3 core areas: Health and Well-being, Living in the Wider World (including Careers and financial education) and Relationships. These core areas offer a context through which the essential skills and attributes are developed giving our learners the skills, language and strategies necessary to manage these situations should they encounter them in their lives

RSE is the lifelong learning about physical, moral, social and emotional development. It is about the understanding of the importance of stable and loving relationships, family, respect, love and care Helps pupils to achieve their academic potential, and leave school equipped with skills they will. need throughout later life.

We do recognise that the PSHCE education programme is just one part of what a school can do to help a child to develop the knowledge, skills, attitudes and understanding they need to fulfil their potential. We do link the PSHCE education programme to other whole school approaches, to pastoral support, and provide a setting where the responsible choice becomes the easy choice. We also encourage staff, families and the wider community to get involved. One example of this is our fortnightly episodes of PSHCE for parents on the school’s website . The department also leads the Rainbow Alliance which supports the LGBTQ+ community in our school.
