A Journey Back in Time to World War 2
On a fantastic, hands-on day of learning, 60 of Year 5 students from Belmont School visited us to take part in Design and Technology workshops centred around the theme of World War 2. The students had the opportunity to explore and create items that were significant during this pivotal time in history, all while enhancing their practical skills and deepening their understanding of the era.
The day’s activities included,
- Apple Crumble Baking: This classic British dessert not only linked to the wartime era, but also offered the students a chance to learn about food rationing during World War 2. They discovered how simple ingredients could be transformed into a comforting treat, much like families did during the war.
- Building World War 2 Fighter Aircrafts: The students took on the role of engineers, designing and constructing their own World War 2 fighter aircrafts. The hands-on nature of this activity allowed students to improve their problem-solving skills, while also sparking conversations about the role of aviation in the war.
- Make-Do-and-Mend Doll Crafting: The Make-Do- and-Mend campaign was an essential part of the wartime effort, and our students explored this concept by crafting their very own dolls from scrap materials. This activity gave the students a window into how families used creativity and resourcefulness to make items out of limited resources during the war.
This workshop was a fantastic way to bring history to life. A big thank you to Ms Hutcheson, Ms Simmons, Ms Kubica, Ms Kricko, Mr Lucas, Mr O’Brien, & Ms McGrath for all their efforts in preparing and hosting such a memorable day.
