Professor Danny Dorling Visits Year 12 Geography

On Thursday 21st of November, Year 12 Geography welcomed Professor Danny Dorling to their lesson. Danny is a professor of Human Geography at the University of Oxford and is a well-known author having written a number of books such as ‘Population 10 Billion’, ‘Shattered Nation’ and ‘Seven Children’.

While he is known best as a demographer, his research and books discuss inequality, geopolitics, development, health and even world crises. He joked that he went to university and never left, so he was able to give insights to the students about what to look for in a university course and how to write personal statements. Danny discussed the themes of his books and this made links to the A level topics of diverse places, globalisation, superpowers, and migration. He also presented data in a way where we could see the accelerations in the data - it was a really unique way to present data that many of us hadn’t seen before. I (Ms Martin) was lucky enough to spend 40 minutes chatting about all things geography, politics and New Zealand before the talk as well.

Thank you to Danny for venturing to London to talk to us and share your expertise. And thank you to Ms Nonnenmacher and Miss Ahmed for their support in getting the talk to run. I am adding his new books to my Christmas stocking list as we speak.
