Chiswick School Commemorates the 80th Anniversary of VE Day

On May 8th, Chiswick School united to commemorate Victory in Europe (VE) Day, paying tribute to the courage and sacrifice of those who helped secure peace in Europe in 1945. Through reflective assemblies and engaging classroom activities, students participated in thoughtful celebrations that brought history to life and encouraged a profound sense of respect and remembrance throughout our school community.

In true wartime spirit, staff and students across the school came together to honour the 80th anniversary of VE Day. The reception area was transformed into a patriotic showcase, thanks to the creativity and hard work of our office team, who decorated the space in red, white, and blue. This vibrant theme echoed across the school, as both students and staff dressed in patriotic colours to show their appreciation and respect.

Throughout the week, each year group attended assemblies to learn about the significance of VE Day—why it is remembered, celebrated, and honoured. On the morning of May 8th all students took part in a special VE Day lesson crafted by Ms. Nonnenmacher, and at noon the entire school paused to observe the national two minutes of silence, taking time to reflect and pay respects.

In addition, a range of VE Day challenges were launched across the school, encouraging students to get involved creatively and meaningfully. We received an array of fantastic entries, showcasing talent, thoughtfulness, and enthusiasm from every corner of the school. Four Year 7 students were awarded prizes for their exceptional creativity and outstanding community spirit.

To conclude the lunchtime celebrations, Mrs. Ellener and Ms. Cunningham brought around Union Jack-themed cakes for everyone to enjoy. It was a day filled with reflection, learning, and celebration. The whole school community left with a deeper understanding of the hardships of war and the immense relief and joy that peace brought 80 years ago.
